New slate roof in Abbey Wood

A roof less than five years old had been so poorly installed it needed replacing. R&W stripped it and re-slated it in Eternit fibre cement slate on new battens and breathable felt.

About this project

This Abbey Wood roof should have had decades of life left in it. Instead, sub-standard workmanship meant it was failing after less than five years.

The team stripped the roof back to the rafters, fitted new breathable felt and 25 x 50 mm treated battens, and re-slated it in Eternit fibre cement slate with proper head-lap and fixings on every slate.

The in-progress photographs show the bare battens and the finished slate side by side: a clean, uniform roof around the chimney stacks that will last as a slate roof should.

Work completed

  • Full strip of failed slate roof
  • Breathable felt and 25 x 50 mm treated battens
  • Eternit fibre cement slates, twice-fixed
  • Ridge and abutment detailing around chimney stacks
